DSV misses out on podium, Wellinger is the top German

At the ski flying event in Planica, Domen Prevc once again demonstrated his exceptional class. In front of his home crowd, the Slovenian delivered two commanding jumps to secure victory ahead of Ren Nikaido and Daniel Tschofenig. For the German team, Andreas Wellinger was the top German finisher in eighth place, whilst Stefan Embacher suffered a setback in the overall ski flying standings following a fall.

Domen Prevc has once again demonstrated his exceptional talent in ski flying at Planica. The Slovenian delivered two commanding jumps in front of his home crowd to secure victory ahead of Japan’s Ren Nikaido and Austria’s Daniel Tschofenig. Andreas Wellinger was the top German, finishing in eighth place.

Stefan Embacher provided a dramatic moment: in the second round, the Austrian lost his balance and fell. Fortunately, Embacher was able to get up unaided and leave the landing area. From a sporting perspective, however, the fall was a bitter blow: following his victory in Vikersund, Embacher had taken the lead in the overall ski flying standings and was 15 points ahead of Prevc going into the season finale. The Slovenian was now able to capitalise on Embacher’s setback and crown his perfect season – the Four Hills Tournament, the overall World Cup, Olympic gold, and the ski flying world title – with the ski flying crystal globe.

A personal debut for Raimund

Olympic champion Philipp Raimund made his ski flying debut in Planica. In previous years, he had opted not to take part due to a fear of heights, but this season he felt ready. Raimund finished 28th; with strong winds, the conditions were anything but beginner-friendly. The best German performances came from Andreas Wellinger (8th), Karl Geiger (12th) and Pius Paschke (24th).

Team competition: Germany misses out on podium

In the final team competition of the winter in Planica, the German ski jumpers also narrowly missed out on the podium. The quartet of Karl Geiger, Andreas Wellinger, Philipp Raimund and Pius Paschke finished in fourth place. Austria won ahead of Japan and Norway, whilst the Slovenian team led by Prevc took fifth place. Strong gusts of wind led to several interruptions, made conditions difficult and made the jumping particularly challenging.

Geiger and Wellinger put in impressive performances with 238.5 and 230 metres respectively in the first round, but were unable to close the gap on the podium places. Paschke and Raimund also struggled with the difficult conditions.

Lindvik seals the deal on Sunday

Marius Lindvik provided a surprise to round off the weekend. The Norwegian won the final ski flying event of the season with jumps of 238.5 and 231 metres, securing his first victory of the season. He was followed by Domen Prevc and his team-mate Johann André Forfang.

The final went smoothly for the German team. Karl Geiger finished eighth, making him the best-placed DSV athlete, whilst Andreas Wellinger narrowly missed out on the top ten. At the same time, it was the final competition under national coach Stefan Horngacher, whose successor has not yet been officially confirmed. Kamil Stoch and Manuel Fettner also bid farewell to the big stage. Stoch, a three-time Olympic champion, dominated ski jumping for many years, whilst Fettner ended his career after a 25-year World Cup career.

To the overall standings.
