Domen Prevc wins the Neujahrsskispringen

Domen Prevc once again dominated the New Year’s Ski Jumping competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Two German athletes, Felix Hoffmann and Philipp Raimund, finished among the top ten.

As is tradition, the New Year’s Ski Jumping event took place on January 1 at the Large Olympic Hill in Garmisch-Partenkirchen as part of the Four Hills Tournament. With perfect weather conditions and in front of a sold-out crowd of 22,000 spectators, Slovenian jumper Domen Prevc clearly outperformed the rest of the field. With jumps of 143 and 141 meters, he secured a convincing victory.

From a German perspective, Felix Hoffmann and Philipp Raimund once again impressed the home crowd with consistent performances and strong jumps. After the first round, the two German athletes were in fifth and sixth place, keeping their hopes for a podium finish alive going into the final round.
In the final round, both jumpers built on their strong first jumps. Felix Hoffmann reached an excellent 136 meters and finished the competition in sixth place. The order between the two athletes remained unchanged, as Philipp Raimund jumped 135 meters and took seventh place, directly behind his teammate.

Philipp Raimund said after the competition: “It’s crazy to see how big the gap to Domen is. He makes incredibly good jumps and has a feeling in the air that I can only dream of right now. Still, my jumps were at a good level, and that’s the most important thing for me.”

Pius Paschke bounced back after missing the second round in Oberstdorf and returned to the final round in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Finishing 23rd after the first jump, he qualified for the second round and eventually ended the day in 21st place. While the 35-year-old could not quite keep up with his very best, this result was a solid one for last season’s overall World Cup sixth-place finisher, after being eliminated in the knockout duels in Oberstdorf.

The competition was less successful for his duel partner Karl Geiger. Despite a good jump in qualification the day before, he failed to reach the second round and also missed out via the lucky loser rule. Ben Bayer was also unable to repeat his strong qualification performance and lost his first-round duel to the in-form Sandro Hauswirth. In the end, Geiger finished 33rd and Bayer 43rd. Andreas Wellinger also missed out on the next round after losing his duel against Robin Pedersen and finishing in 32nd place.
