Freitag impresses with podium finish in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

Selina Freitag got off to a strong start in the Two Nights Tour by finishing second on the Große Olympiaschanze in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Together with her teammates, she capped off the year with an impressive performance for the German team.

The German women’s ski jumpers made a successful start to the Two Nights Tour in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. At the opening competition on New Year’s Eve, Selina Freitag secured an impressive second place, finishing just behind Slovenia's Nika Prevc.

Freitag expressed her joy immediately after landing, raising her fist. Shortly afterwards, she cheered with her two teammates when she appeared in first place on the scoreboard. Later, the current top competitor, Nik Prevc, moved into first place.

Second place marks an excellent start to the tournament for Freitag, which is expected to be replaced next year by the first full Four Hills Tournament for women. For Prevc, the victory was already her 27th World Cup win.

Reflecting on her performance on the first of two competition days, Freitag said: “This podium means an incredible amount to me. Finally, all the hard work is paying off.”

National coach Heinz Kuttin rated Selina Freitag’s performance very highly already after the first round: “That was a really good jump. Everything is possible for Selina here.” His assessment was soon confirmed.

Katharina Schmid and Agnes Reisch also delivered strong performances. Schmid, who has announced her retirement at the end of the season, was already in seventh place after the first round and once again showed a solid jump in the final round. In the end, she finished level on points with Reisch, who also impressed with a strong competition. Both athletes shared eighth place.

The presumably final edition of the “Two Nights Tour” will conclude on New Year’s Day with the competition in Oberstdorf. From next season onwards, plans are in place to stage a full Four Hills Tournament for women at all four traditional venues. An important step has already been taken: the long-discussed construction of a floodlight system in Innsbruck has recently received the green light.
