New hill record for Leyhe in PyeongChang

Kraft and Kot with the wins in South Korea. Strong Wellinger comeback on Thursday.

Nearly one week before start of the Skijumping World Championships in Lahti (Finland), the ski jumpers had the chance to test the Olympic hills of Pyeongchang, host of the Olympic Winter Games in 2018 at two World Cup competitions on Wednesday and Thursday.

Stefan Kraft showed again his strong condition on winning the first competition (138m/137.5m). Andreas Wellinger came in second with two jumps on 136 meters and landed in front of World Cup leader Kamil Stoch from Poland (126.5m/134m). The surprise of the day was brought by Stephan Leyhe who established a new hill record with 139.5 meters and gained the best World Cup result of his career.

The second competition could not be accomplished on the big Olympic hill due to bad wind conditions, instead the athletes competed on the smaller normal sized hill. Maciej Kot (POL) took the win (108.5m/110.5m) leaving behind the winner of the preceding day Stefan Kraft (106m/107m) and Andreas Wellinger who started a powerful comeback standing on position 16 after the first heat and finishing 3rd with the best jump of the day (99m/112m).
