Ski Flying World Championships: Success for DSV eagles
The Ski Flying World Championships at Kulm is one of the highlights of the season.
National coach Stefan Horngacher nominated the five DSV eagles Karl Geiger, Stephan Leyhe, Pius Paschke, Philipp Raimund and Andreas Wellinger.
Anže Lanišek, the winner of the New Year's ski jumping competition, suffered a knee injury during landing in training before the World Championships and will have to take several weeks off. We would like to take this opportunity to wish him a speedy recovery!
The qualification scheduled for Thursday on one of the largest ski jumping hills in the world had to be canceled due to poor wind conditions. Instead, the national coaches nominated their strongest jumpers, who were then eligible to compete in the first round of the individual competition. Philipp Raimund did not make it into the German line-up.
Friday - Individual competition
After the first two rounds on Friday, Andreas Wellinger still had a good chance of a podium finish as the best German. He finished fourth, 0.5 points behind the third-placed Norwegian Johann André Forfang.
Saturday - Individual competition
Due to the wind conditions, there was only a third of the original four rounds on the day to decide the new Ski Flying World Champion. Andreas Wellinger once again impressed with a strong jump of 229 meters, landing in second place and securing the vice world champion title. He was once again beaten by Austria's Stefan Kraft, who secured the title at the Ski Flying World Championships for the first time.
The other results of the DSV eagles:
Stephan Leyhe (10th place)
Karl Geiger (19th place)
Pius Paschke (23rd place)
Sunday - Team competition
In the team competition on Sunday, Pius Paschke, Karl Geiger, Stephan Leyhe and Andreas Wellinger again competed for the DSV eagles.
Even before the final round, the German quartet was in third place with a clear lead over the Norwegians. They were then able to defend their position and were delighted with the bronze medal at the Ski Flying World Championships.
As in the previous two years, the Slovenians secured the world championship title. Second place went to the Austrians.
This weekend, the German jumpers will compete again in the World Cup and in front of their home crowd. The winners will be determined in two individual competitions in Willingen.
